New York Governor Andrew Cuomo accused of sexual harassment for second time in one week

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo accused of sexual harassment for second time in one week

Seems like the problems facing New York governor, Andrew Cuomo keep piling up as another former aide of his has come forward with allegations of sexual harassment,  just days after his first accuser made her claims public.

In a New York Times exclusive, Charlotte Bennett, an executive assistant and health policy adviser in the Cuomo administration until she left in November, alleged that Cuomo "asked her questions about her sex life, whether she was monogamous in her relationships and if she had ever had sex with older men."

Bennett aged 25, described an incident that took place in June when she was "alone" with the governor aged 63 in his State Capitol office.

According to the New York times report, he allegedly asked her if she thought age made a difference in romantic relationships and that he was open to having relationships with women in their 20s, which were noted by the Times as "comments she interpreted as clear overtures to a sexual relationship."

Bennett alleges that Cuomo never tried touching her, but that the governor's "message" during that exchange was "unmistakable to her."

"I understood that the governor wanted to sleep with me, and felt horribly uncomfortable and scared," Bennett told the Times.

"And was wondering how I was going to get out of it and assumed it was the end of my job."

According to the Times, Bennett disclosed the incident to Cuomo's chief of staff Jill DesRosiers less than a week later and submitted a lengthy statement to Cuomo's special counsel Judith Mogul at the end of the month.

She was them transferred to another job as a health policy adviser, placing her on the opposite side of the Capitol building.

Bennett told the Times she didn't legally proceed with the case because she "wanted to move on" and that she was content with her new job.

Cuomo has now responded to the bombshell reports, claiming she came to him to reveal she was a sexual assault survivor, he was trying to be helpful towards her.

In a press release on Saturday February  27, Cuomo called Bennett a "hardworking and valued member of his team during COVID" who has "every right to speak out."

"When she came to me and opened up about being a sexual assault survivor and how it shaped her and her ongoing efforts to create an organization that empowered her voice to help other survivors, I tried to be supportive and helpful," Cuomo said in a statement, which was issued to the Times.

"Ms. Bennett's initial impression was right: I was trying to be a mentor to her. I never made advances toward Ms. Bennett nor did I ever intend to act in any way that was inappropriate. The last thing I would ever have wanted was to make her feel any of the things that are being reported."

Cuomo added that he will "have no further comment" until a "full and thorough outside review" of Bennett's claims is conducted and concluded.

Cuomo's special counsel Judith Mogul also released a statement, which read in-part, "Ms. Bennett's concerns were treated with sensitivity and respect and in accordance with applicable law and policy... The determination reached based on the information Ms Bennett provided was that no further action was required which was consistent with Ms Bennett's wishes."

Lindsey Boylan, Cuomo's first accuser, who was the former deputy secretary for economic development and a special adviser to Cuomo, published a bombshell essay Wednesday on the website Medium.

She accused the governor of going "out of his way to touch me on my lower back, arms and legs," forcibly kissing her on the lips during a one-on-one briefing, and suggesting that they "play strip poker" during a plane ride.

Cuomo's office denied Boylan's harassment claims, calling them "simply false" and insisting the strip poker comment "did not happen."

Boylan has now expressed her support for Bennett.

"I am with you Charlotte. We are with you. Always," Boylan wrote. "I am so proud of you Charlotte."

Meanwhile, Cuomo faces another scandal over his controversial policy of ordering COVID-positive patients into nursing homes in the early months of the pandemic and is now reportedly facing investigations by the FBI and the U.S. Attorney over an alleged cover-up of nursing home deaths in his state.

CNN, the home network of Cuomo's younger brother Chris Cuomo, has not given the scandal much coverage since it broke on Saturday.

CNN also went roughly 24 hours without acknowledging Boylan's damning sexual harassment claims after she came forward.

Bride kidnapped with other passengers along Maiduguri-Damaturu road regains freedom

Bride kidnapped with other passengers along Maiduguri-Damaturu road regains freedom

A Nigerian Bride simply identified as Hauwa who was kidnapped by suspected Boko Haram members along the Maiduguri- Damaturu road on Friday, February 26, has regained her freedom alongside other abductees.

Hauwa and other family members were said to have been on their way to her husband's house in Maiduguri after they had finished their wedding Fathia when the gunmen attacked the bus conveying them and took them into hiding.

A family member who confirmed the development, said they received a call from military troops in Beneshiekh that the bride including her entourage and other abducted passengers have regained freedom and that they should proceed to Beneshiekh town situated between Maiduguri- Damaturu 135km highway to receive them.

The bride who is a graduate of the University of Maiduguri is a resident of the Gamboru kasuwan shanu area.

I didn?t collect salary for 8 years as governor of Osun state - Rauf Aregbesola says The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has said that he never collected any salary all through his eight years in office as governor of Osun state. Aregbesola who is currently serving as Nigeria's Minister of Interior Affairs, stated this while dismissing reports published by online that he received 96-month salary arrears in secret when he served as the governor of Osun state. A statement from Aregbesola’s media aide, Sola Fasure, described the report as a fiction written by elements bent on casting “aspersion on the integrity of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola” “The report is entirely a piece of fiction, a good exemplar of fake news and disreputable journalism. Let me state categorically again, that Ogbeni Aregbesola did not receive any salary in the entire duration of his eight-year stint as governor in Osun. His reason being that the state government provided accommodation, security, transportation, food and other conveniences for him and would not need to pay for these from his pocket. He also explained that all his children are grown up and have graduated and he would not need to pay school fees again. He therefore donated his salaries to the state government. The author of the report claims to have got the information from some anonymous government officials. He provides no evidence. The report fails basic journalistic ethical requirement that only truth and verifiable fact should be reported as news. Reading through it, one is not in doubt that the evil intention behind the piece was to smear and cast aspersion on the integrity of Ogbeni Aregbesola.

Gov Ganduje sacks his his Special Adviser on Media, Salihu Tanko Yakasai, after he criticized President Buhari and APC

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state has sacked his Special Adviser on Media, Salihu Tanko Yakasai.

The state Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, in a statement on Saturday, February 27, said the sacking followed Salihu's “continued unguarded comments and utterances which are deemed contrary to the stand of the All Progressive Congress, APC, government which he is serving”.

According to the commissioner, the sack is with immediate effect.

Garba added that Salihu had failed to differentiate between personal opinion and official stand on matters of public concern and therefore cannot be allowed to continue to serve in a government he does not believe in.

The governor via the statement warned political appointees and public servants to guard against making statements capable of drawing superfluous controversy.

The statement reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Ganduje to the policies and programs of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Salihu while reacting to the abduction of the Zamfara schoolgirls, asked the President Buhari-led administration to stop the insecurity or resign from office.

Don't forget that petroleum goes from South to the North- Afenifere reacts to strike action by Cattle Traders association

Don

The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has said Northerners can withdraw their cows from the South but should not forget that the southern states produce petroleum, the country's economic mainstay.

The Cattle and Foodstuff dealers under the aegis of Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria (AUFCDN) on Thursday, February 25, began a nationwide strike following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum given to the federal government to attend to their demand. The union had demanded payment of N475 billion compensation for lives of members and properties lost during the #EndSARS protest and Shasa market chaos, and dismantling of all roadblocks on federal highways due to problems its members get subjected to when carrying out their duties.

Reacting to the development, the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, told DailyIndependent that there are other sources of protein that the southerners could consume aside from cows. ACcording to him, the North shouldn't forget that petroleum comes from the South.

"They should not forget that petroleum goes from South to the North. So, they should be careful. When you are throwing stones at your neighbours, you should be careful what he throws back at you''he said

Odumakin said the North could not threaten the South with the withdrawal of cattle and other food produce as there are other places where the items can be purchased. He listed countries such as Togo, the Benin Republic as friendly countries where the South can purchase cattle and other items withdrawn by the North.

"If they withdraw their cows from the South, no problem about that. Before cows, we had what we are eating. Cows are not the only source of protein; there are several other sources. It will encourage our people to do more in the area of agriculture.

We have neighbours who are peaceful in Benin Republic, Togo and other places that we can buy things from. They can't threaten us with anything such as withdrawal of item."he said

I wrestled with the devils - Olisa Metuh reflects on his life in prison

Olisa Metuh, the former spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said that he will use the rest of his life serving God and mankind, revealing that he saw hell while he was in prison.

Metuh spent 10 months at the National Correctional Centre, Kuje, FCT over issues bordering on money laundering and was released on December 24, 2020.

Speaking during a reception organised for him by the PDP in Awka, the Anambra State capital on Wednesday, February 24, Metuh said he saw hell in prison and has learnt how to serve God and humanity.

“I have been to the lowest, deepest end of the valley. I have wrestled with the demons. I wrestled with the devils. The Almighty God has saved me. For that, I commit the rest of my life to the service of God and the people. It is not easy. It is just like being in your house and an armed robber comes to your house, takes away all your earnings, beats you up, violate your wife, deal with your children and you can’t do anything because he has the gun. When we have power, we should know how to use it because there is God in heaven. At the end of the day, all of us will die,” he said

Metuh said while in prison, he learnt to be humble and to forgive people. He urged people to try to forgive one another.

The union had demanded payment of N475 billion compensation for lives of members and properties lost during the #EndSARS protest and Shasa market chaos, and dismantling of all road blocks on federal highways due to problems its members get subjected to when carrying out their duties.

Usman said;

“The leadership of the union has already made a strong plan to ensure that all our exits (our borders) between the Northern and Southern part are closed.

“Every truck that will go out has to be checked. If you carry any food or cattle, you cannot take it out except you take it back or be destroyed there. None of the security agents should dare intimate our task force members because if they do, we will fight it legally.”

Usman who recalled how they gave a 21-day ultimatum to the federal government, vowed that the union would not compromise on its demands.

Before we talk of amnesty, there should be clear evidence that there’s a sincere repentance - Former Catholic archbishop of Abuja Archdiocese, John Onaiyekan

Before we talk of amnesty, there should be clear evidence that there?s a sincere repentance - Former Catholic archbishop of Abuja Archdiocese, John Onaiyekan

Former Catholic archbishop of Abuja Archdiocese, John Onaiyekan has stated that amnesty should only be granted when there is clear evidence of repentance.

Onaiyekan who appeared on a Channels Television program on Wednesday February 24, averred that while he believes criminals should be forgiven when they repent, the problem he has is figuring out if it is true repentance.

He went on to list measures that should be taken if the repentance has been verified. The former archbishop said;

“I believe firmly in what the Bible says that it is not the will of God that a sinner should die but that he should repent and live. So obviously, if a criminal sincerely repents, he should be forgiven. But the question is when it comes to the real facts of whether he has repented or not, the state must have a way of making sure that this is not a joke.

“The whole idea of amnesty is not only to be applied to armed bandits, in that case it is true for everybody in jail in Nigeria. For the sake of law and order, to protect the rest of us, the few who are making life difficult have to be restrained. The armed dogs should be tied down. The armed bandits should be disarmed.

“Before we talk of amnesty, there should be clear evidence that there’s a sincere repentance and that the people concerned have decided not to pick up arms anymore, that they’re ready to go back to their normal way of life and if they’re foreigners, they’re ready to go back home. All this must be part and parcel of the process of amnesty.

“The bandits must be reconciled with society, they must change, they must decide to be really repentant and show it clearly. And not be put in a position to brag around to appear that they have actually won, and defeated the nation.”

He added that dialogue with criminals should be carried in a way that will not make others take up arms with hope of also getting amnesty.

Onaiyekan added;

“I don’t think we should reach a stage where the nation simply says we’re unable to deal with the situation. We should be able to deal with it and on one hand, we must be open to amnesty, forgiveness, and on the other hand, we need to keep law and order and not make it an incentive for others to pick up arms and wait for amnesty and rehabilitation."

The 84-year-old pontiff picked professor Roberto Bernabei, an expert in health care for the elderly, as his physician, the Vatican said in a statement on Wednesday, February 24.

Bernabei, 69, leads the geriatrics and rehabilitative medicine department at Rome's Gemelli, the Catholic hospital where popes are traditionally treated.

Francis is believed to be in relative good health, despite having had part of his lung removed when he was a young man after developing pleurisy.

Last month, he cancelled several events due to a chronic nerve condition that causes hip pain and makes him walk with a slight limp.

The pope later received the coronavirus vaccine alongside his predecessor, former pope Benedict XVI.

"I'm Gay" - Ghanaian journalist, Ignatius Annor finally comes out on live TV after denying being one for years (Video)

A Ghanaian journalist has finally come out as Gay on live TV after denying being one for years.

Mr. Ignatius Annor, a former Metro TV broadcast journalist, who now works with Euro News made the announcement in an interview with Joy News via Zoom on  Monday, February, 22.

In the interview, he disclosed that the fear of losing his journalism career and the stigma around it were the reasons why he always denied it when confronted about his sexuality.

“This is going to be the very first time that I am using your medium to say that not only am I an activist for the rights of Africa’s sexual minorities, what you will call the LGBTQI community, but I am gay.

“Obviously, I denied it because I was afraid of losing my job, I was working at an incredible Television station in Accra and also for the fear of what would happen to me personally,” Mr Annor said on JoyNews via Zoom.

This comes after LGBT+ Rights Ghana both fundraised and built a new office, which serves as a crucial community centre for queer Ghanaians, sparking outrage in the country.

But the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values (NCPHSRFV), a coalition of various faith leaders and officials that once drew international outrage for running a camp that “treated for homosexuality” have called for its closure.

According to Mr. Annor, that would be a breach of their human rights.

“It doesn’t feel like I am a human being who deserves the right to employment, the right to education, and normally the basic rights to be able to walk, drive around to wherever that I want to go to in Ghana as an openly gay man. It doesn’t feel okay, it feels dehumanised and awful.”

He also recalls after returning to Ghana after studying for his Masters in the UK, to look for employment but none of the media houses were willing to hire him “just because of the stigma that surrounds my community”.

PDP intervenes on Governors Ortom and Bala's faceoff on armed herdsmen

PDP intervenes on Governors Ortom and Bala

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intervened in the faceoff between Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed on the issue of herdsmen who carry AK-47.

Recall that after Bala supported herdsmen carrying AK-47 and also occupying forests, Ortom accused him of being a part of those threatening his life. He also asked Governor Bala to render an unreserved apology and learn from the provisions of the constitution that land both territorial,  forest, and aquatic, are vested on the governor of a state who holds them in trust, instead of indulging in inciting Fulani herdsmen against innocent Nigerians.

Reacting to the faceoff between the two Governors elected on its platform, the PDP called for calm as the internal reconciliation mechanism introduced by the hierarchy of the party between the two governors subsists.

A tweet shared by the party read;

“@OfficialPDPNig assures that it has waded into the rift  between Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed and his Benue State counterpart, Governor Samuel Ortom.

@OfficialPDPNig calls for calm as the internal reconciliation mechanism introduced by the hierarchy of the party between the two governors subsists.

“PDP however urges the Federal Government to take urgent steps to address the escalated security challenges in our country.”
