Yele Sowore advises End SARS protesters on what to do if curfew is declared in their states

Former presidential aspirant, Omoyele Sowore has adviced End SARS protesters on what to do if a curfew is declared in their states.

He gave this advice after the Lagos State governor declared a 24-hour curfew in Lagos following days of End SARS protests.

Yele tweeted: "#Endsars Please if any state or city declares a curfew, as #Lagos just did, just go to a designated protest ground with enough supplies. Let the “curfew” meet you at a place of righteousness. Stay there protesting until the curfew is lifted. Thank you! #Revolutionnow."

However, some Twitter users did not agree with his advice and they've slammed him.

#EndSARS: Ekiti state government declares 24-hour curfew

Following the various attacks on #EndSARS protesters in the state, Governor Kayode Fayemi has imposed a 24-hour curfew on the state effective from 10pm on today, Tuesday, October 20.

In a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, Biodun Oyebanji, the state government said the curfew became necessary following the state government's observation of how the end SARS protest, which started as a peaceful protest against police brutality by youths in Ekiti State, has been hijacked by some hoodlums.

Read the statement below

1. The Government of Ekiti State has observed with growing concern how the ENDSARS protest, which started as a peaceful protest against police brutality by youths in Ekiti State, has been hijacked by some hoodlums.

2. The hoodlums have capitalised on the ENDSARS protest to rape, assault, rob and extort innocent citizens across the State. These are in addition to the wanton destruction of properties, particularly private properties.

3. Government is concerned that if this state of affairs is allowed to continue unabated, it will lead to a breakdown of law and order thereby threatening the wellbeing of the people of Ekiti State.

4. For the purpose of clarity Government continues to show understanding and responsiveness to the demands of the legitimate protesters.

5. On 16th October 2020, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi, Governor, Ekiti State met with the protesters in person. While identifying with the legitimacy of their protests, he assured them that the State Government will immediately put measures in place to respond to all their demands.

6. Government has since then constituted a Human Rights Investigation Panel to review all cases of abuse by Officers of the disbanded SARS. In addition, Government has enabled a Victims Compensation Fund to facilitate speedy remedial measures for victims of such abuse.

7. Furthermore, several officials of Government have engaged the protesters at multiple fora and platforms including the social media in order to ensure that concerns of protesters are properly identified and responded to in a prompt and efficient manner with necessary feedback.

8. Government had also at various times drawn the attention of the protesters to the troubling hijack of the protests by individuals whose only interest is to inflict violence on the people of the state.

9. In the past 48 hours there have been incidents of gang-rape, robberies, physical assaults on innocent people, looting and burning of a police station. These acts of brigandage are not in consonance with the legitimate aspirations of the protesters. It cannot be logical to seek to remedy impunity with impunity.

10. Government therefore cannot afford to watch a deliberate enthronement of anarchy by some bad elements who have hijacked the protest for some clandestine reasons.

11. Consequently, the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, hereby imposes a 24-hour curfew on all parts of the State starting from 10.00 pm tonight, Tuesday, October, 20, 2020.

12. Only essential workers and service providers with valid means of identifications are allowed to move around during the period of the curfew.

13. Any person found on the street that does not belong to this category, would be promptly arrested and prosecuted according to the laws of Ekiti State.

14. We seek the understanding of the good people of Ekiti State as we continue to take deliberate steps towards ensuring that peace and normalcy return to our state.''

Uefa say 'final eight' format may return for 2024 Champions and Europa Leagues

UEFA has admitted it could change to a ‘final eight’ format for the Champions League and Europa League from 2024.

The format proved to be a big hit as the single-country, one-leg format was used to conclude last season’s competition in a campaign hugely disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

UEFA this season announced it will revert to the regular two-legged system for quarter-finals and semi-finals for the rest of this season, but has not ruled out a change to the format beyond that.

Giorgio Marchetti, UEFA’s deputy general secretary, said: “A good rule is to never exclude something which proves valuable or has potential.

“We know there are many elements that need to be taken into account, such as calendar and organisational constraints, fans’ involvement, economic implications, but we will for sure study this format and its variations for our upcoming discussions.

“Single knock-out matches obviously favour uncertainty and emotions.

“We received great feedback from clubs, broadcasters and other partners as well as from the fans. The circumstances made this format a must, but the result could not be better as well as the degree of satisfaction.”

The 2019/20 Champions League’s final stages took place in Lisbon, while the German cities of Cologne, Duisburg, Dusseldorf and Gelsenkirchen hosted the conclusion of the Europa League.

Marchetti admitted that staging all European competitions had been the result of great co-operation between all clubs and league associations.

“The football community really worked together: without the joint work and unity of intents with national associations, leagues and clubs nothing would have been achieved,” he said.

“And as we had only two months to set up simultaneous tournaments in Portugal, Germany and Spain, the local federations and authorities supported us massively.”

He said UEFA would take the same ‘strong determination’ that helped them pull off the final stages of last season’s competitions into the rest of 2020/21, which is taking place against the backdrop of a second wave of coronavirus infections across the continent.

“Everybody watched the final eight tournaments in August. What almost nobody knows is that from the beginning of August almost 500 UEFA matches have already been played,” he said.

“All the qualification rounds to Champions League and Europa League (no one single club was excluded from the access list), two men’s and one women’s international windows, under-21s.

“There are many restrictions and a strict protocol to apply with an incredible number of tests on all teams, but these difficulties don’t scare us.”

Nigerians have taken to Instagram and Twitter to react to the prison break which occurred in a prison popularly known as “White House” in Edo State.

Earlier today, videos of prisoners trooping out of a prison was shared online and it was claimed thugs hijacked the End SARS protests and released prisoners in Edo State.

Following the jail break, the state government  imposed a dusk to dawn curfew.

However, Nigerians suspect something fishy about the jail break and they've taken to different social media platforms to share their opinions.

Some accused the state government of staging the jail break to get End SARS protesters off the streets. Others asked how the prisoners left through the open gates without resistance from prison guards. Others pointed out that the prisoners were all dressed in mufti, not in prison uniforms, as though it had been planned.

Genevieve Magazine publisher, Betty Irabor wrote: "This Edo State prison break is fishy."

Lauren Idahosa, the wife of Bishop Feb Idahosa, also questioned the prison break, writing: "How come we haven't heard one story by now about prison staff being killed or injured due to the prison breaks here in Benin? Warden, something doesn't seem right. In the process of your prisoners escape, there wasn't one injury?"

She added: "Anyone else sense something fishy here?"

Nigerian Governors appeal to #EndSARS protesters to call off the protest

The Nigeria Governor’ Forum (NGF) has appealed to #EndSARS protesters to call off the demonstrations across the country.

The appeal was made after an emergency meeting held on Sunday October 18. NGF Chairman and Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi who condemned the attack on Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State, added that criminal elements and hoodlums have hijacked the protests by maiming innocent citizens, looting and destroying properties.

The statement read in full;

ISSUED AT THE END OF THE 20TH TELECONFERENCE EMERGENCY MEETING OF THE NIGERIA GOVERNORS’ FORUM HELD ON SUNDAY, 18TH OCTOBER 2020

We, members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), at an Emergency meeting held today, Sunday, 18th October 2020, deliberated extensively on the nationwide protests, riots and demonstrations.

Governors thereafter Resolved to:

  1. Condemn the attack on Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State by armed persons while he was addressing anti-police brutality protesters in the state capital Osogbo; protesters are encouraged to engage with the government appropriately at both the national and State level to ensure that the protests are not taken over by hoodlums who are instigating a breakdown in law and order in many parts of the country.
  2. Activate a Judicial Panel of Enquiry to receive all cases of police brutality by officers of the disbanded SARS Unit. Each State is also expected to kickstart a compensation mechanism for all victims.

#EndSARS protest: Youths are entitled to peaceful protests - President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has warned against criminal elements hijacking protests across the country.

The President who noted that youths are entitled to a peaceful protest in a meeting with the  Minister of Youths and Sports Development Mr Sunday Dare, vowed to implement reforms he promised.

Speaking to state house correspondents after the meeting with President Buhari, the Minister pleaded for more time to enable the federal government implement some demands of the #EndSARS protesters as promised.

Dare said;

“Mr. President said the youths of this country have spoken and he has heard and he has since gone to work for the youths of our country.

“The President promised that he will ensure that the reforms he has promised are met, he will make sure that the reforms are long lasting and that the reforms will deliver for our country a police force that we will be proud of

“He appreciates the fact that they have brought the SARS issues to the fore through their peaceful protest.

“He recognises the fact that they have called upon the government to do what is necessary and that as the President and a father, he will make sure that the demands as put forward are met.

“The President said that as far as he is concerned, it’s important to allow the younger generation to exercise the freedom to protest and make sure that such protest is in a peaceful manner.

“He said that part of the demands that were made is to make sure that those protesting are protected and that any police officer that has in one way or the other attacked any protesters be brought to book.

“So the President thinks it’s a fundamental right, he thinks so long as the protest is peaceful and focused.

“He believes that the youths of this country have the right to demand for certain things”

EFCC confirms attack on its website, disowns lawyer who allegedly resigned from the agency to join the #EndSARS protest

EFCC confirms attack on its website, disowns lawyer who allegedly resigned from the agency to join the #EndSARS protest

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that there were attempts to breach its website over the weekend.

The anti-graft in tweets shared on its official Twitter handle, also asked members of the public to disregard claims of a lawyer resigning from the agency to join the #EndSARS protest.

Dominic was accused of pulling a stunt as he "merely served as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in the Port Harcourt zonal office of the Commission from November 2019 to October 16, 2020 when he completed his national service."

It read;

The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has been drawn to a report trending in the social media regarding a certain Dominic Akpan who claims to have resigned from the employ of the Commission to join the #EndSARS Movement.

He cited undisclosed “ugly experiences” he had within the Commission for his action.

The EFCC wishes to inform the public that Akpan is not a staff of the Commission. He merely served as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in the Port Harcourt zonal office of the Commission from November 2019 to October 16, 2020 when he completed his national service.

He therefore could not have resigned from the EFCC to join the #End SARS Movement.

The stunt by Akpan is nothing but crass opportunism. And, seeking to achieve his selfish objectives riding on the crest of the popular protests by the youth, clamouring for institutional reform in Nigeria, is a disservice to the #EndSARS  Movement.

The EFCC therefore urges members of the public to disregard the report, in addition to the one which also claims that the Commission’s website had been hacked.

Though there were attempts, over the weekend, to compromise the website by some cyber criminals the attacks were successfully repelled. The EFCC website is up and running.
