Robber swallows lady’s wedding ring in Lagos (photo)

A traffic robber who swallowed his victim’s wedding ring after threatening to kill her along with three other suspected traffic robbers has been arrested by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Command in Oshodi and CMS part of the metropolis.

The ring swallowing suspect, Taofeek Adebayo, 19, along with an accomplice, Toheeb Tijani, 20 were arrested in Oshodi – Oke shortly after dispossessing two ladies occupying a grey Sienna bus of a gold earring and a set of wedding rings.

The two other suspects, Samson Oluwa, 20 and Michael Amodu Adamu, 22, were arrested in an all-night sting operation in CMS.

Adebayo, in company of his gang had on Friday June 14th, pleaded with two gorgeously dressed ladies in a Sienna to assist them with money for food in traffic. The two ladies extended a N100 note to them, which the suspects instantly rejected.

According to the driver of the Sienna, who pleaded for anonymity,

“My colleague and I were coming from Anthony and heading to Ilasa for our association’s meeting. Three of them (pointing to the suspects) came near our vehicle. There was traffic and we could not turn anywhere. We were scared. They said we should give them money for food. I reach out to my colleague to give me money. She gave me N100 which I gave them. They rejected it. One of them said, ‘eleyi ki I se owo ti wa’. I told them this is what I have. One of them pulled my left ear and removed my earring. Two of them turned to the other side of my vehicle. They threatened to waste us if we don’t give them money. ‘Where is the money’, they screamed at us. In a hurry to leave our car, they forced my friend to surrender her wedding ring. This yellow guy (pointing to Adebayo) took the first one and swallowed it in our presence. His colleague took the other one”.

When interrogated, Adebayo said

“I swallowed it but I have vomited it and handed it over to Young Boy, he was the third guy when police were chasing us. I told him to hand over the rings to the ladies so that the police can release us but he absconded with the two rings and earring”.

His accomplice, Tijani, who according to reports, was on the watch list of police for snatching a mobile phone from a commuter in traffic earlier in the day stated, ‘I have released the phone to the LASTMA officials standing in Oshodi Oke. They told me that RRS officers were looking for me to arrest me”.

The two other suspected traffic robbers were arrested around Friday midnight when they were robbing a stranded motorist around CMS, Lagos.

Commenting on the development, the Commissioner of Police, Muazu Zubairu stated that the police would not relent on its efforts towards making Lagos safe for law abiding citizens. He directed that the suspects be transferred to Makinde Police Division, Oshodi and SCID, Yaba.

58-years after, Nigerian universities still slow in discoveries and inventions - President Buhari

President Buhari has urged Nigerian universities to intensify efforts at making discoveries and inventions that can assist the development of the country as he lamented their slowness in making discoveries and inventing things.

The Nigerian leader made the call on Saturday in Dutsinma, Katsina State, in his address at the fourth convocation of the Federal University, Dutsinma (FUDMA). "It is not heart-warming that in our over 58 years of independence, Nigerian universities are slow in discoveries and inventions,” he said.

The president, represented by Hafiz Abubakar, a professor, the former Deputy Governor of Kano State, said part of the speech would serve as a wake-up call to the nation’s universities.

“Research, critical thinking, moral dispositions, discoveries, and inventions should find natural habitats in our universities, as they do in several other universities in the world. Universities are supposed to be strong drivers of the country’s development initiatives for sustainable development,” he said.

He, however, said that his administration would continue to do everything possible to improve structures and facilities in the institutions and to enhance learning by training the required manpower through various interventions like TETFUND. Buhari also urged FUDMA to partner with Sokoto River Basin Development Authority to produce improved agricultural varieties and give the required scientific and extension support to the local farmers.

He said this would enhance the farmers’ productivity and economic viability.

Harassing my wife and children is unacceptable- ex-governor Okorocha warns Governor Ihedioha

The former governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha, has warned his successor, Governor Emeka Ihedioha, to stop harassing his wife and children.

Okorocha who was sworn in as a Senator on Thursday June 13th, made this known in a statement he released by his Special Adviser (media). The governor alleged that foot soldiers of his successor were being used to harrass his wife and children. Read the statement below

We want to make this appeal and ask Governor Emeka Ihedioha to take charge as the governor of the State and halt the incessant harassment and abuse of the wife and children of the former governor of the State, Owelle Rochas Okorocha by his senior appointees and their foot soldiers. Specifically, Governor Ihedioha should call Uche Onyeaguocha and his thugs to order and stop them from their harassment and abuse of the wife and children of the former governor.

Chief Ihedioha should not create an ugly history or set a very bad precedence as the first governor of the State who took delight in harassing the children and wife of the man he succeeded as governor. Chief Ikedi Ohakim never harassed or abused the children and wife of Achike Udenwa he succeeded as governor. Owelle Rochas Okorocha for one day, never harassed or abused the wife and children of Chief Ohakim who he succeeded also as governor. Ihedioha should follow those examples. His appointees have been harassing and castigating the children and wife of the former governor even at public functions and in the media. This is not good for the Office of governor.

They can criticize or malign Rochas Okorocha on any issue which they have been doing, but to begin to harass the children and wife, is unacceptable to us and indeed, to all decent men and women in the society. Thugs believed to be working for the secretary to the State Government, Chief Onyeaguocha invaded a mechanic workshop around the Orji flyover and took away a vehicle undergoing repair and owned by the daughter of the former governor, Uloma Nwosu nee Okorocha. Even when she later sent her staff with the particulars of the vehicle they took away, to show that the vehicle does not belong to the State Government and to show that she bought the vehicle long time ago, they threatened to beat her and detain her and never cared to look at the particulars of the vehicle. If Ihedioha’s government wanted anything from any of the former governor’s children or wife they could do so through the Police or DSS in the State. Invading their houses or impounding their private vehicles even from the mechanics for any reason, is barbaric and should be frowned at.

It is also important to remind those who have got appointments for chewing election result sheets that no human being has the monopoly of thuggery or lawlessness and the most dangerous situation could arise when people are pushed to the wall. It also gives the wrong impression that those who want to be Secretary to the Government of the State should only need to tear or chew election result sheets. Okorocha’s wife and children never committed any crime by remaining in the State after he had left as governor, when the children and wives of those before him are all at overseas.

They are here because they believe in the State and Owelle has an addiction for the good of the State. Finally, people should not see Rochas Okorocha’s penchant for peace and tolerance as weakness. A word should be enough for the wise.

Photos: Nigerian father of two allegedly tortured to death by South African Police

Another Nigerian national, Maxwell Ikechukwu Okoye, has allegedly been killed by members of the South African Police Service in Ladysmith, Kwa-zulu-Natal Province.

The Vice-President, Nigerian Union in South Africa, Mr Joshua Ogade Itua, who confirmed the incident in Pretoria said that the 39-year-old father of two, from Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State, was allegedly tortured to death in the early hours of Friday.

According to the Chairman of Nigerian Union South Africa, Ladysmith Chapter, the Police came to the deceased apartment and forced their way in.

“While they were with him, he called to alert other Nigerians but before they could get to his apartment the police had made away with his body. Maxwell’s lifeless body was later seen at the mortuary,” he said.

Itua said that NUSA leaders then went to the police for fact finding, noting that his death has added to the number of Nigerians that were killed either by the Police or through Xenophobia in that country.

“The Station Commander of Ladysmith claimed that he was met foaming as at the time they gained entrance to his apartment. Police murder inquest has been opened and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) in Kwa-zulu-Natal province have been informed for full investigation. Our condolence to his family and Nigerian Community in Ladysmith. We call on our government to seriously engage its counterparts in South Africa for investigation and prosecution if not a natural death. This is because, according to our leaders who went to the mortuary, there are bruises and blood all over his body, hence, we have every reason to believe that he was tortured to death. Our stand as foremost Nigerian organisation in South Africa is that all cases involving the killings of Nigerians should be investigated and prosecuted irrespective the nationality and status of the perpetrators,” he said.

David Cruz, a Nigerian in Ladysmith, Kwa-zulu-Natal posted photos of the deceased today.

Senge was arraigned on a four-count charge, bothering on forgery and obtaining money by false pretence.

Count one of the charges reads: "That you Mary Senge on or about the 27th day of July, 2018 within the jurisdiction of this honorable court, with intent to defraud, did obtain the sum of N2,765,751(Two Million, Seven Hundred and Sixty--five Thousand, Seven Hundred and Fifty-one Naira) from John Folefal Abila when you falsely represented yourself as able to procure a Canadian Visa for his brother Lekeaka Gilbert which pretence you knew to be false and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 (1) a of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act."

He promised the court that his client will always be available in court for the trials. The prosecuting counsel opposed the bail application, stating that the defendant is a Cameroonian citizen and will likely jump bail and return to her country.

The judge admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N5million, (Five Million Naira) with two sureties in like sum, who must live within the jurisdiction of the court, and must be senior civil servants, who own landed properties and have three years evidence of tax payment, certified by the FIRS. They would also have to submit their three passport sized photographs to the court registry. She remanded her in Suleja Prison until her bail conditions are met.

“Igbo Presidency doesn’t exist” Okorocha cautions Southeast

Newly sworn-in Senator Rochas Okorocha, has informed Nigerians from the South East to wake up from their slumber and work hard to become politically relevant as there is nothing like ''South East presidency''.

The former Imo state governor said this while speaking with newsmen shortly after he was sworn into the Senate yesterday Friday June 13th. Acording to the governor, such an agenda as the Igbo Presidency cannot become a reality if those who desire it do not work hard for it.

“Power is not given, power is taken. The South East cannot just fold their arms and expect power to be given to them just because you want power. Power does not go with sentiments, sometimes it’s on issues on ground.

Democracy is about the people and the South East alone cannot make themselves president. So you cannot be talking about Igbo presidency, it doesn’t exist. We may be talking about Nigeria’s president of Igbo extraction but that depends on what other geopolitical zones think about the issue.

For me, what is important is let power be given to somebody who has something upstairs who can put food on the table of the common man, irrespective of religion or where you come from.”

The Senator added that the South East needs to mend fences across the country in other to remain politically relevant.

“There is need for the Igbos to mend fences. We are neither here nor there now politically. We are not in the ruling party, neither are we making impact in the opposition. So, there is need for us to get married to the rest of the nation politically.”he said

Father who murdered his five children is sentenced to death

A South Carolina father has been sentenced to death for killing his 5 children with his own hands after which he drove around with their bodies for 9 days.

Timothy Jones Jr., 37, was sentenced to death on Thursday, June 13, one week after he was convicted of five counts of murder.

The computer engineer with an $80,000-a-year job murdered his kids, ages 1 to 8, in their Lexington home in August 2014. Afterwards, he drove around with their bodies for nine days before dumping them in garbage bags on the side of a dirt road in Alabama.

Solicitor Rock Hubbard told jurors Jones has been selfish all his life and tried to break up his father’s second marriage because he wasn’t getting enough attention.

In his own marriage, he controled his wife's every decision. When his wife left him, Jones couldn’t stand that his control was over so he took his anger out on the kids. Whenever any of his kids indicated any intention of wanting to be with their mother instead of him, he mistreated them, Hubbard said.

Jones first killed 6-year-old son Nahtahn after the boy confessed on the phone to his mother, but not to him his father, that he broke an electrical outlet, Hubbard said. Over the next several hours, Jones got cigarettes, took his oldest daughter first so she wouldn’t call for help, and left the three other kids with their brother’s body.

In a confession, Jones said he strangled 7-year-old Elias with his hands and chased down 8-year-old Merah before choking her. He then used a belt to choke 2-year-old Gabriel and 1-year-old Abigail because he said his hands were too big.

After killing the children, Jones loaded their bodies into his SUV and drove around for nine days before dumping them in five black garbage bags on a dirt road near Camden, Alabama. He was arrested hours later after an officer at a traffic checkpoint in Smith County, Mississippi, said he smelled a horrible odor of decomposition.

During the trial, Jones' father, stepmother, sister and two brothers all took the stand to ask that he be given life without parole, instead of the death sentence. Jones' father removed his shirt to show the courtroom tattoos of his slain grandchildren.

Jones ex-wife, Ms Kyzer also requested mercy for her ex-husband even though she had said "If I could personally rip his face off, I would."

"He did not show my children any mercy by any means," she said. "But my kids loved him and if I'm speaking on behalf of my kids and not myself, that's what I have to say."

Timothy Jones Jr. showed no emotion as the jury delivered the verdict after less than two hours of deliberation, according to TIME. Jones’ father, who was in court, hung his head in his hands as the verdict was read and other family members appeared to cry.

Jones is the second person to be sent to South Carolina’s death row in five years. The state has not executed anyone since 2011 and lacks the drugs to carry out lethal injection.

Singer MC Galaxy has paid forward a good deed music executive, Ubi Franklin, did for him so many years ago. The singer shared on Instagram a written cheque of N3 million in Ubi's name and explained why he was gifting the music executive such a huge sum of money. He wrote

''This life is funny, seven years ago I needed help to pay house the total I needed was 350k.
