Ex-England footballer, Paul Gascoigne on trial for sexual assault

Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne who was accused of planting a “sloppy”, drunken kiss on a fellow train passenger has been arraingned in court on charges of sexual assault.

The 52-year-old ex-Newcastle United, Spurs and Lazio midfielder told police he kissed the woman to boost her confidence, Teesside Crown Court in northeast England heard. Prosecutor William Mousley told jurors the case concerned “a brief but unpleasant assault with sexual overtones on a train by a drunken male stranger in his 50s”.

After moving away from her seat in front of Gascoigne due to his drunken behaviour, and after he tried to sit on her, Gascoigne then “put his hands on her cheeks and kissed her forcibly and sloppily on the lips,” said Mousley. She called the police after getting off the York to Newcastle train, and officers called Gascoigne that night.

Gascoigne, widely regarded as one of the most talented players of his generation, told police he knew what the claim was about, saying he had “kissed a fat lass”, Mousley said. The prosecutor said the woman had found the incident “shocking, upsetting”.

Gascoigne broke onto the global stage with his dazzling performances during the 1990 World Cup in Italy, capturing the nation’s heart when he burst into tears after getting booked in the semi-final defeat against West Germany, which would have ruled him out of a potential final.

He has since struggled with alcoholism since retiring from top-flight football. Gascoigne known as “Gazza” made his name with home-town club Newcastle before going on to play for Tottenham, Italian giants Lazio and several other teams including Glasgow Rangers.

He however denies the single charge of sexual assault.

Three more women accuse actor Cuba Gooding Jr. of sexual assault

Oscar-winning actor, Cuba Gooding Jr has been accused of sexually assaulting three more women.

According to the New York Post’s Page Six, two of the women bringing new accusations against Gooding said he grabbed their behinds in New York City restaurants in 2008 and 2013, respectively, while the third woman’s accusations are unclear.

The publication also disclosed that the police are currently investigating the accusations.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for the New York Police Department said only, “The NYPD takes sexual assault and rape cases extremely seriously, and urges anyone who has been a victim to file a police report so we can perform a comprehensive investigation, and offer support and services to survivors.”

The 51-year-old actor has not been charged yet in the three new cases. However, he has been charged with forcible touching and misdemeanor sexual abuse for allegedly groping a woman's breast at Magic Hour Rooftop Bar and Lounge in Manhattan in June. The maximum penalty for the offense is a year in prison.

Gooding is expected back in court for his arraignment today, October 15, 2019.

Responding to reports three more women have come forward to police, Mark Heller, one of Gooding's defense lawyers said he doesn't believe accusers.

"They can’t simply add, it has to be taken to a grand jury, and if they didn’t do it now it's not likely they'll do it again," Heller said. "These 'other' cases, the district attorney did not have the confidence or the evidence that they are prosecutable and that’s why they were not (included) in the indictment."

Fuel subsidy will gulp N450 billion in 2020 - Finance Minister, Zainab Ahmed

Zainab Ahmed, the Minister for Finance, Budget and National Planning, has said under-recovery of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly referred to as fuel subsidy will gulp N450 billion in 2020.

She stated this at the public presentation of the 2020 budget proposals in Abuja on Monday, October 14th saying, “we have a provision for under-recovery of PMS in the sum of N450 billion. If you look at the Budget office website, it is in the fiscal framework, which is an annexure to the budget.”

President Buhari had on Tuesday presented a budget proposal of N10.33 trillion to a joint session of the National Assembly, putting the government’s estimated revenue in 2020 at N8.155 trillion, comprising oil revenue of N2.64 trillion, non-oil tax revenues of N1.81 trillion and other revenue of N3.7 trillion.

She explained further: “Some reforms will be tough but they must be done to look at the facts and be frank to ourselves. However, we will engage the public sector in whatever we do, including any changes in taxes with regards to rates or administration methods.”

Hillary Clinton believes Meghan Markle is targeted by British tabloids because she’s biracial

Hillary Clinton believes racism has something to do with the way Meghan Markle is being targeted by the British tabloids.

In a new interview for The Sunday Times of London, the former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, 71, defended Meghan Markle, saying her biracial background "certainly" played a role in the harsh treatment from British tabloids.

Clinton said this in response to a question about Prince Harry’s latest move to sue three British tabloids.

Clinton said during the interview: "I do want to say that the way she’s been treated is inexplicable."

Hillary pointed out that race is "certainly part of it."

"If the explanation is that she’s biracial, then shame on everybody," Clinton added.

Clinton’s daughter Chelsea was also asked the same question and she said that the way the British press treats Meghan is likely because she is super bold and "has a voice."

"She proudly had a career first and has a voice that she thankfully continues to use," Chelsea said when asked about the Royal family’s decision to sue multiple tabloids.

"Anyone who has the temerity to break the mold of what has previously been established and expected often, unfortunately, receives criticism and bile that I don’t understand," she added.

Prince Harry announced the decision to sue multiple news outlets at the beginning of October. He also shared a letter condemning the behaviour of the media.

"Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences – a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son," he wrote in the statement.

He continued: "There is a human cost to this relentless propaganda, specifically when it is knowingly false and malicious, and though we have continued to put on a brave face – as so many of you can relate to – I cannot begin to describe how painful it has been. Because in today’s digital age, press fabrications are repurposed as truth across the globe. One day’s coverage is no longer tomorrow’s chip-paper."

Photo: Three 'Okada robbers' who impersonate police officers arrested in Lagos

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, have arrested three suspected okada robbers in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

The suspects, Emmanuel Michael, 24, who rode on a motorcyle, in company of two other accomplices; Moses Ogeh, 27 and Ojonugwa Ojomeje, 29, were arrested in Ita-Maga area of Ikorodu after hijacking a motor bike popularly called ‘okada’ from a cyclist while impersonating police officers. Two of the suspects: Ojomeje and Ogeh were caught in MOPOL vest, police vest and fez cap while trying to escape after collecting an ‘okada’ from a rider in Ikorodu.

The trio, operating on Michael’s bike in the area, had around 10:00 p.m. accosted another ‘okada’ rider, stopped him and dispossessed him of his motorcycle. They were said to have told the owner that they were police officers from a nearby police station.

The victim on releasing the ‘okada’ to the robbers walked few steps away before crying out for help. This drew the attention of passers-by and the operatives of Rapid Response Squad in the area. They were chased and arrested few metres from the scene.

According to the Ojomeje, the leader of the gang, “ in July 2019, men in police uniform collected my ‘okada’ in Ikorodu Bus Stop. They told me they were Taskforce team from Ebute Police Station. They advised me to meet them there while they took the ‘okada’ away. It was after 10:00 p.m.

“I went from Ebute Police Station to Ijede, Mola and Ladigboye Police Post, there was no trace of them. It was my only means of livelihood. It was exactly a week I got the ‘okada’ on hired purchase at N280,000. I paid only N40,000 with a balance of N240,000 to settle the owner, Chinedu. I searched for it in all the surrounding police stations but there was no record of it.

“In order to pay the balance because Chinedu couldn’t take the excuse, I borrowed my friends bike, and bit by bit, I paid another N40,000. Because the owner was deeply on my neck for the payment, I sought the assistance of my friend to help me hijack another ‘okada.”

He continued: “I had a MOPOL vest at home thrown away by a former neighbour in Obalende. I appealed to Michael to borrow me his sister’s husband police uniform. The plan was to get a motor bike for me and later on, I would pay them too after I might have finished paying my debt.

“While I put on the MOPOL vest, Ogeh, a food stuff seller put on the police vest and fez cap. At around 10:00 p.m, the three of us set out using Michael’s ‘okada’ to Ita Maga. We collected a bike but we were arrested”.

Protesting vociferously to Ojomeje’s explanation of their roles, Michael and Ogeh stated that they were charmed and made to take an oath by their ring leader. They added that they were offered kolanut to eat after Ojomeje had promised them a successful outing. The suspects have been transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

FG now saves N4.5bn monthly from ghost workers - EFCC reveals

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said its intervention assisted to save N4.5 billion monthly, lost to ‘ghost workers’ on the federal government’s payroll.

A statement by EFCC’s spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, quoted the commission’s Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, as saying this while delivering a lecture on Thursday at the National Defence College (NDC) in Abuja.

Magu spoke on the topic “Corruption and Anti-corruption Strategies in Nigeria: Way Forward,” at the Course 28 Study Programme of NDC with the theme: “Economic Diversification and National Development”. He reiterated the commitment of the current administration to rid the country of corruption, adding that the involvement of the EFCC had helped in fighting corrupt practices.

Magu also commended the introduction of Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) into salary payment, which he said had assisted to save such amount for the government.

“The involvement of the EFCC in tackling the scourge of ghost workers in the civil service has led to a redemption of over N4.5 billion naira monthly. The EFCC has been engaged in eradicating ‘ghost workers’ from the federal government’s payroll which has resulted in saving as much as N4.5 billion naira monthly.

“The Bank Verification Number (BVN) has been an effective tool in carrying out investigations effectively, as it has curtailed the opening of fake bank accounts by fraudulent individuals. The only gateway to development is through fighting corruption.

“If Nigeria breaks away from corrupt practices in government businesses and in the private sector, we will transform into a model state overnight,” he said.

The commission’s acting chairman disclosed that the commission had secured up to 2,165 convictions over a period of 10 years between 2009 and 2019. He added that 70 per cent of it was achieved between 2016 and September 2019 under his watch.

Police find almost 100 fetal remains in abortion doctor's vehicle, weeks after more than 2,200 preserved fetuses were discovered at his home

Police authorities have found close to 100 fetal remains in the vehicle belonging to Dr. Ulrich Klopfer, the specialist abortion doctor who died last month just after police found over 2000 fetal remains in the garage of his Illinois residence.

Klopfer, 71, died on September 3, and about 2,246 medically preserved fetal remains were discovered in his Will County, Illinois home after family members went through his house and belongings a week later.

According to the South Bend Tribune, Klopfer is the state's 'most prolific abortion doctor in history,' as he has performed tens of thousands of abortion procedures in multiple Indiana counties for decades, and his license was suspended in 2016 for failure to exercise reasonable patient care and violating multiple notice and documentation requirements during abortions.

It was also found out during investigations that Klopfer had been carrying out abortions on girls under 14 years of age and had been using the same sort of abortion and sedation procedures that he had used since the 1970s and 1980s- even though there were not casualties or complications after the procedure.

The Will County sheriff's office says during its investigation last month into the origin of the remains found in the garage of the doctor's rented property, it became aware of numerous vehicles and properties either owned or rented by Klopfer in the Chicago suburb of Dolton.

Eight vehicles belonging to Klopfer were located, and in the trunk of one car, five plastic bags and a box were found to contain "numerous medically preserved fetal remains."

According to the sheriff's office, fewer than 100 fetal remains were recovered Wednesday, although that may change "pending a more thorough examination of the contents and records."

Will County police on recovering the new fetal remains in the doctors vehicle said;
''The Will County Sheriff’s Office was made aware that numerous vehicles and possibly other property owned by Dr. Klopfer were stored in an outdoor gated lot of a business located in Dolton, Illinois,'

"The remains recovered were preserved, packaged, and marked similarly to the previous fetal remains discovered at the Klopfer residence,"

In 2014, Indiana Department of Health cited Klopfer's clinic for 27 deficiencies and started investigating his hospital, the investigation resulted in Klopfer's clinic being cited for 27 deficiencies according to reports by Daily Mail UK and ABC 57.

The state agency filed another complaint and hearing request to revoke the clinic's abortion license when the clinic failed to submit a plan of correction for the previous deficiencies.

The state agency in June 2015 also found that the clinic wasn't adhering to the state law that patients needed to give their voluntary and informed consent 18 hours prior to an abortion being performed, instead Klopfer and his clinic gave out the abortion medication during the initial consultation, instead.

Whether Klopfer carried out the abortions in his home is yet to be determined by police investigators.

Klopfer's defence line during investigations was that he had never had a patient die or go into cardiac arrest in the 43 years of his practicing abortions - as he also revealed he once aborted the foetus of a 10-year-old girl at an Illinois hospital after she had been raped by her uncle.

He however didn't report the rape to the police but allowed the child go home with her parents who were aware of what the uncle did and didn't want to involve the police either .

Firm launches data-free media streaming platform to boost Nigeria’s film industry

PlayMock, a data-free media streaming platform, is venturing into the Africa Market, with a focus on boosting Nigeria’s film industry.

Due to its no-data requirement and cost effective subscription model PlayMock, envisions putting seamless streaming into the hands of the everyday African.

In addition to the African market, PlayMock intends to have a foothold in North America, Europe and Asia targeting Africans and consumers of African content in the diaspora. With aims of being a one stop shop for entertainment that is accessed via the app alone.

PlayMock users will be able to view some of the best Hollywood, Nollywood and international content through their smartphone, tablet or smart TV.

Speaking during the weekend at the launch of PlayMock, George Ibekie, Chief Executive Officer, PlayMock has said providing access to content in a cost effective way is the goal of the service. "The goal is to use technology to solve the problems that people have when it comes to consumption of entertainment. Nigeria produces a lot of content but the problem is access. We are creating access and levelling the playing field so that everyone can participate. It's about innovation and the next best thing.

"Piracy is not free and people pirate when there is no cost effective way to view content. What we are doing here is that we are creating access to content at a price that most Nigerians can afford," Ibekie said.

This is also as experts in the Nigerian film industry have said that diversification in the way films and content is being distributed would go a long way in improving revenue streams currently realised from the industry.

Zack Orji, Actor and filmmaker has described new innovations in the way films are being distributed as a welcome development in the sector.

Orji who spoke during the launch of PlayMock said, "For me as a filmmaker this is a beautiful thing. The sky is so big that it can accommodate everybody. I see this as people taking advantage of opportunities that are available. Anybody who views this as a rivalry, then that person doesn't want any progress for us in the industry. It just simply means people should keep re-engineering themselves to getting better.

"The economic implication of this simply means more income for filmmakers if they learn to take advantage of this. More income for filmmakers means more revenue is being injected to the economy. It can only be better for the economy if it is well harnessed."

Orji also said that diversification of film distribution is the way to go and has warned against anybody claiming proprietary rights over the ways content should be distributed in the industry.

PlayMock is an American based company with operations in Nigeria. The streaming service which claims that consumers would not require data to access content on its platform has the ability to connect up to eight users at a time to a single PlayMock device.

The service says its offering to its customers is that of accessibility to content with the opportunity to choose from a wide range of content at an affordable price.

President Trump approves troop deployment to Saudi Arabia in response to attacks on Saudi oil sites

US President Donald Trump on Friday, September 20th approved the deployment of thousands of American troops to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in response to an attack on Saudi oil facilities.

The approval was announced at the Pentagon by Defense Secretary Mark Esper. He said the deployment was at the request of Saudi Arabia, after its oil facilities were targeted in drone and missile attacks.

“In response to the Kingdom’s request, the president has approved the deployment of U.S. forces, which will be defensive in nature and primarily focused on air and missile defense, ” Esper said.

He added that “all indications” are that Iran was responsible for the attacks. The troops will be deployed in a “defensive posture” to increase security, Esper said, though it was not immediately clear how many additional troops would be sent to the region.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Dunford said it would not be “thousands” of troops. Trump had in recent days indicated the administration believed Iran was behind the incident, but officials had refrained from saying so definitively.

Indian police arrest Nigerian man, Chuka Onwumere for staying illegally in the country

A Nigerian man identified as Chukwa Onwumere Zef, along with a Sri Lankan citizen have been arrested and detained by the Kancheepuram district police near Mamallapuram on charges of staying illegally in India.

The two men were caught during a door-to-door inspection ahead of the informal meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese president Xi Jinping scheduled to take place in the coastal town from October 11 to 13.

While the travel documents of the Nigerian had expired, the Lankan national was found to have entered the country illegally a decade ago. The Nigerian was staying in the house of Nagamuthu in Venpurusham, a village near Mamallapuram.

“Both his passport and visa have expired but he hasn’t applied for extension,” said a police officer. The Mamallapuram police registered a case and detained him. Inquiries revealed that Raja Nayagam, 41, a native of Killinochi in Sri Lanka had entered India illegally in 2009 and was working as a painter. He was staying at the house of Balakrishnan, police said.

Kancheepuram district police said the house owners will be interrogated about housing foreign nationals in their premises without checking for relevant documents. The intensive checks will continue in the coming days, a senior police officer said. The two detained on Friday, September 20th were booked under Section 12 of The Passports Act and section 14 of the Foreigners Act.

Presidency says UN rapporteur report on insecurity in Nigeria is disappointing

The Presidency has expressed its disappointment with UN Rapporteur Report of violence in Nigeria which it said was silent on intra-group, inter-group and community violence.

The preliminary Statement released by the UN Special Rapporteur Agnes Callamard at the end of her 12-day mission to Nigeria read “Nigeria is a pressure cooker of internal conflicts and generalised violence that must be addressed urgently, with issues like poverty and climate change adding to the crisis. The overall situation that I encountered in Nigeria gives rise to extreme concern.”

However the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu, condemned the report and also stated that Benue, Taraba, Cross River States and other parts of the country had casualties and displaced persons as a result of intra-group, inter-group and community violence.

Admitting that violence between farmers and herders which has a long history in Nigeria spiked in recent years, the Presidency said peace has returned to affected areas due to the effectiveness with which the Federal and State authorities responded.

“We are saddened that the rapporteur did not address intra-ethnic conflicts and cattle rustling as key elements in herder/farmer conflicts. In Benue State for instance, the Tiv/Jukun conflict and kidnapping is a major problem. We are glad that local communities have fully realized this, and scholars with a strong motivation for peace and stability in their communities and the nation are trying to address the problem.

“Ignoring the salient issues will not help to solve the problem. If you are going to address violence and the general insecurity in Nigeria, incidents everywhere should be part of the narrative. Not addressing this might make it easier to blame the Federal Government, but national peace and security is community based and a collective responsibility.

“Arrests, prosecution and locking people up are only small parts of National Security and Safety strategy,” Mr Shehu said.
