Nigerian defender Kenneth Omeruo reveals he told Chelsea's Tomori to choose Nigeria over England

Former Chelsea and current Super Eagles of Nigeria defender Kenneth Omeruo has revealed that he asked Chelsea starlet Fikayo Tomori to play for Nigeria before he eventually decided to play for Gareth Southgate's England.

Both Tomori and Omeruo were once Chelsea players before Omeruo was sold to CD Leganes in Spain this season having been deemed unwanted by Frank Lampard.

According to Omeruo who was on loan last season, he and all players on loan incuding Tomori had a whatsapp group where messages were constantly exchanged.

Tomori is now the third Chelsea player of Nigerian decent after Ross Barkley and Tammy Abraham to be capped by England.

Tomori, who has been capped once by England was cajoled to play for Nigeria but finally caved in to the English FA according to Omeruo..

''Tomori was a bit younger but he has really improved a lot. Unfortunately for him he chose England. I wanted him to play for Nigeria! ' Omeruo said to The Sun UK

''(The WhatsApp messages) were good, the boys could catch up and share videos whenever a player made it into team of the week or was man of the match. That was a good connection.''

See more photos from heavyweight boxing rematch as Anthony Joshua defeats Andy Ruiz to regain his titles

Anthony Joshua defeated Andy Ruiz Jr in their world heavyweight title rematch which took place on Saturday Dec 7 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The British-Nigerian boxer who suffered a shocking defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr back in June in New York City, regained his IBF, WBA and WBO titles as he defeated the Mexican-American boxer by unanimous decision.

The bout which lasted until 12 rounds was scored 118-110, 118-110 and 119-109 by the judges.

Speaking on his victory, Joshua said: "I wanted to put on a boxing masterclass."

"First of all, thanks to god. The first time was so nice, I had to do it twice," he said.

"I knew I could win this. This is about boxing, I’m used to knocking guys out.

"I gave the man his credit, I said I would correct myself, I respect Andy, But I wanted to put on a boxing masterclass.

"It’s the sweet science, it’s about hitting and not getting hit.

"No change in mentalist, stay hungry and stay humble. I’m going to remain humble in victory. Thanks to Ruiz and his family, thanks to Saudi, the fans and thanks to god and Eddie Hearn."

Richard Akinola, Group to Falana: Blaming Osinbajo, Other Lawyers in Buhari's Cabinet Over DSS Misconduct is Mischievous

*Both recall how VP as Ag. President acted in similar case when DSS invaded National Assembly

*Buck stops squarely on Mr. President's desk, not lawyers in FEC

Veteran journalist and lawyer, Richard Akinola and a political group have faulted Femi Falana, SAN over comments that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) should discipline all lawyers in the Buhari administration because of the desecration of the law courts by officers of the DSS yesterday at a Federal High Court in Abuja.

In his reaction on Saturday, Mr Akinola said, “With the greatest respect to my good friend, Femi Falana, SAN, l beg to disagree with him in respect of his statement in respect of the Vice president on the Sowore saga.

Falana was indicting the Vice President and other Learned Silks in the cabinet for not speaking up on the saga. “It's necessary to put things in proper perspective. There is only ONE presidency. By my understanding, the VP cannot be issuing statements on an issue when there is a sitting president.

He added that, “Recall that when Osinbajo was acting as president and similar incident happened at the National Assembly, he took action. The invasion of NASS started at about 7am and by 10.30 am, Lawal Daura had been fired as the DG of DSS.

“So, it would be unfair to attack the VP on this matter because he is just the VP. The buck stops at the president's table. If in the president's wisdom, he refused to take action, he must have his reason. Ours is to speak out for him to take action,” he said.

Similarly, a political group in Nigeria has described as mischievous the comments credited to Mr. Falana.

Falana reportedly made the statement following the re-arrest of Omoyele Sowore, convener, #RevolutionNow protest, and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare by the Department of State Services (DSS).

In a press statement signed by Peter Oladele, Publicity Secretary of the Initiative to Save Democracy (ISD) the group said the lawyers in the Buhari administration have not acted in any unprofessional capacity to warrant any disciplinary action.

Besides, the group noted that regarding the Vice President in particular it is an unrealistic expectation to require him to respond officially on the misconduct of the DSS agents because the executive powers of the Federal Government are vested only in the person of the President not the Vice President or the lawyers in the Cabinet.

"Besides the President who has the Executive powers in the 1999 Nigerian Constitution as Amended, the only person who has responsibility on this matter is the Attorney-General of the Federation," the group explained, adding "this facts are well known to Mr. Falana."

The Initiative to Save Democracy (ISD) also recalled that while the VP was acting for President Buhari and the DSS invaded the National Assembly, Prof Osinbajo acted in defense of rule of law and democracy in the country by removing the head of the organization and condemning the invasion. ISD then asked "why does Mr. Falana now think the VP or the lawyers in the cabinet could not advise the President to act in a similar way, afterall it is the same Buhari Presidency?

“Mr Falana is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and he should know that Section 11 of the NBA’s Legal Practitioners Act has specific penalties for unprofessional conduct and there is no provision for disciplining lawyers for the actions of other people,” the group said.

“So how do you call for disciplinary actions against colleagues who have not acted in any unprofessional capacity or have not breached the rules of professional conduct,” the group quizzed.

The group then advised Mr Falana to rid himself of any emotional outbursts that could overshadow what is otherwise a noble work he is doing on the Sowore matter, stressing that, as a senior lawyer he should know who has what powers and where the buck stops in a Presidential system of government such as Nigeria is currently practising.

“As a group we have condemned the actions of the DSS and have called for the immediate release of Mr Sowore because the court has ordered his release. We also condemn the re-arrest of Mr Sowore by the DSS it only puts Nigeria in bad light. And we should not use this unfortunate incidents to dent the image of lawyers in the Buhari cabinet."

Take your agitation for restructuring to NASS - Presidency tells Nigerians

The Presidency has stated that only the National Assembly has the constitutional power to restructure the country.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity Mallam, Garba Shehu who spoke at a media parley with House of Representatives correspondents, urged proponents of restructuring to take their agitation for restructuring to the national assembly as the Buhari-led administration is committed to the promise which is contained in APC manifesto.

He said: “We in the APC are committed to restructuring. Read the manifesto of the APC. It is stated there and so, we are not running away from it. President Buhari is ready to restructure the country.

“The problem we have with a lot of the proponents of restructuring is that they are looking for the fastest way to that restructuring. They don’t want to use the parliament. They want to use extra constitutional bodies and that is untidy. If you are a democrat, you abide by the processes.

“The parliament is the institution of government working with the executive and the judiciary. For you to say no you want to do a congress at Yaba Market Square and debate; do you want to cause a fight.

“We must be organised and follow due process. If you have a case on restructuring, come to the parliament. In any case, the Senate President has announced that this 9th Parliament will start constitutional amendment in January. So, bring your issue. These are intelligent people voted for by the people.

“Those who shout restructuring saying they want a parallel body to-do that, we have said to them that they are wrong. The sovereignty of the people resides with the parliament and so, if you want to restructure the country, come to the parliament.

“If you don’t have confidence in the parliamentarians you have voted for, wait for four years and vote them out and choose another set of people. But you cannot circumvent the role of the parliament in a democracy and it is key to whatever restructuring you want,” he said.

On the controversial media bill, the Presidential spokesperson insisted that the proposed death penalty is not the only thing contained in the bill. According to him, there is need to curb fake news as it can lead to the death of other Nigerians which is not acceptable.

He said: “It is your responsibility as the media to help the Nigerian government on the issue of hate speech before the parliament. The Minister of Information, who speaks for the Nigerian government, has spoken of the necessity of a law to govern social media.

“I am being careful on what he wants to do because I think there are parallel processes going on. I also blame the media for creating unnecessary controversy. If you look at the law being discussed, the media has focused more on the death penalty for fake news.

“You have a responsibility of studying that bill. Only a few days ago, the American Ambassador met the sponsor of that bill and at the end, he said Nigerians should have a rethink. It is your duty to reap it open and tell Nigerians what it contained. The bill is not all about death penalty or free speech,” he said.

He also said, “I think we have a problem that Nigerians have to address. Nobody is saying that President Buhari or the parliament should impose a law against the press. I am happy that they will hold public hearing on this and if you have any objection to some of the elements, come forward and tell parliament that you have objection. This country needs a law that will regulate social media and attack fake news.”

On claims of the current parliament being a rubber stamp legislature, Garba Shehu said;

“Anybody who is thinking that because the parliament and the executive has worked together on the finance bill and the budget within record time, so we are dealing with a rubber stamp parliament, such a person better look back and see what happened in the past.”

Andy Ruiz blames 'three months of partying' for defeat to Anthony Joshua in Saudi Arabia (video)

Mexican-American boxer, Andy Ruiz who spearheaded one of the biggest upsets in boxing by defeating Anthony Joshua to win the world heavyweight titles in New York in June, has blamed his defeat in their rematch on three months of partying and celebration.

The boxer who rolled out his excuses at the post match conference, said he partied, became overweight and undertrained for the rematch which took place in Saudi Arabia on Saturday December 7.

Andy Ruiz said: "Three months of partying and celebrating affected me, what can I say?

"Being overweight, I wasn't fluid enough, I wasn't moving the way I wanted to move.

"I think if I'm lighter I'm going to let my hands go and be a completely different fighter."

When asked what he would have done differently if granted a rematch against Anthony Joshua, he said;

"Listen to my coach. Listen to my dad. And take it more seriously.

"I'm OK, I'm just a little disappointed. I should have listened to them.

"I tried to do the training on my own. I should have listened to them more.

"There's no excuses...the partying and all that stuff got the best of me.

"For being out of shape I did pretty good, I took all his shots."

Ruiz recognized that he lost a wide decision to Joshua but said he holds a victory too. He said the scores are tied with one win apiece and he wants a trilogy bout.

"I know for the third one I'm going to be a lot better."

He added: "There's a lot of responsibility being a champion of the world. I think the partying and all that stuff got the best of me. Next time it'll be a lot better."

63-year-old Vice President Constantino Chiwenga files for divorce from 36-year-old wife, evicts her from home

Vice President of Zimbabwe, Constantino Chiwenga, has filed for divorce from his 36-year-old wife, Mary, after a nasty fallout when he was seriously ill and hospitalised in South Africa.

According to insiders, Chiwenga believed he was poisoned by his wife who attempted to have him write a will in which she will be the largest beneficiary of their vast estate after his death.

The retired army general who toppled Robert Mugabe has reportedly instructed his lawyer Wilson Manase to handle the divorce proceedings. Zimbabwe Independent reported that Chiwenga and Mary have been living separately after he arrived the country from China where he was hospitalised for four months, before staging a remarkable recovery.

“The general was livid when the proposal (to write a will) was made. He was weak and emacipated, but summoned all the energy he had to let Marry know his feelings. He accused her of wanting him dead and even suggested that she could be working with his political rivals to poison or bewitch him,” a government official said.

“He then barred her from seeing him. When arrangements were made for the VP to be flown to China, she was kept in the dark. The general also made it clear that he did not want to see her while in China and that is the reason why she never visited him in Beijing when he was hospitalised there for four months.”

Officials said Chiwenga has not tried to hide his disdain for his wife even in public.“That is the reason why Marry was not part of the welcoming party at the Robert Mugabe International Airport when the general returned. It was not a coincidence. It was by design,” the official said.

“Mary was also not at the Chiwenga homestead last weekend when the general held a welcome home party. He did not mention her when he was mentioning people who stood by him when he was ill.”

It was further gathered that Mary ignited the Vice President's wrath after she asked for a Marriage Act union as he battled for his life in the hospital.

Mary who is a former model and ex-wife of footballer Shingi Kawondera, only had a traditional marriage with the retired General in 2011 and they have two children together. The marriage is recognised under Zimbabwean law but carries complexities which notoriously brings grief to widows.

Chiwenga reportedly divorced his first wife Jocelyn in 2010, to clear the path for his marriage to Mary. He evicted Jocelyn from their matrimonial home using soldiers.

This storm too shall pass - Natalie Nunn's last message to her husband before news of her threesome with celebrity Big Brother co-stars surfaced

American video vixen and reality star, Natalie Nunn, took to Instagram to praise her American football player husband, Jacob Payne in a post which appeared to reference the news that she had a threesome with her celebrity Big Brother co-stars, Dan Osborne and Chloe Ayling three days before the news surfaced.

In the post, she wrote: 'You’re my bestfriend! My husband the father of my child! No matter what in this world you sit on the throne you’re my ! This world is full of craziness and you’ve always been my peace! Through any hard time you stay strong to protect your !! This storm too shall pass but in the meantime I pray we continue to just dance in the rain together ?! I love you @mrjacobpayne.

Three days later, Chloe Ayling, in an interview with The Sun, claimed she enjoyed a sex session with Dan Osborne and Natalie in a hotel room following a drunken night out in London in 2018.

Chloe said: “Dan cheated on Jacqueline with me and Natalie. We’d all had a lot to drink and a threesome happened.

“He had full sex with Natalie in front of me in the bathroom, and then kissed and performed a sex act on me. It was a debauched night – we were drunk and we let loose.

“After it happened Dan was full of himself. He didn’t seem to care what had just happened in front of everyone.

“I distinctly remember Dan saying he needed to go because he was spending the day with Jacqueline and the kids because it felt so jarring with what had just happened. I have regretted it ever since.”

According to her, the group enjoyed a night out in London before returning to Natalie’s room at the St Martin’s Lane hotel at around 3am.

Chloe added: “Dan joined us after the dinner and we went to two nightclubs before going back to the hotel in the early hours of the morning. There are pictures of us out and me and Natalie kissing.

It has also been claimed that Natalie's husband has dumped her and moved out from their home amid Dan Osborne and Chloe Ayling threesome claims.

A source to The Sun: ‘Jacob was so angry when the story came out last night. He has gone to stay with friends and says he needs some time alone.

‘It's not looking good and the scandal has broken up their marriage. Natalie is devastated and cannot believe this is happening.’

Natalie Nunn and Jacob Payne, who both got married in May 2012, welcomed their first child, daughter Journey Ruth Payne in April 2017.

Nigerians call out VP Yemi Osinbajo over re-arrest of Omoyele Sowore

Nigerians have taken to social media to condemn the re-arrest of Omoyele Sowore on Friday by the operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, less than 24 hours after he was released.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu had earlier ordered the SSS to release Sowore within 24 hours and also pay him N100,000 for improper legal conduct. The SSS then released Mr Sowore only for him and his co-defendant to be re-arrested.

Reacting to the incident, many Nigerians took to their social media platforms tothe Vice President of Nigeria, who is a Professor of Law and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria for not speaking interfering.

"The DSS acting lawlessly because Buhari doesn't want to interfere"

"Sowore supported Buhari against Jonathan. Karma is a bitch"

"Buhari is not aware of Sowore's case"

"DSS is to be blamed not Buhari"

"Osinbajo is only an assistant"

You need not be a fan of Sowore to condemn the rascality of the DSS under this Buhari led government. No respect for the Judiciary anymore and more pathetic is the fact that our VP, Osinbajo SAN is serving under this government that doesn't believe in rule of law. #NotMyCountry— Mazi Simeon (@Mazi_Simeon) December 6, 2019

Why are people mentioning and blaming @ProfOsinbajo for the blatant disregard of rule of law and the arrest of Omoyele Sowore inside the court room, we all saw what Osinbajo did when he was acting President. DSS court invasion confirms Nigeria sliding into dictatorship ― PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the invasion of the sanctity of the Federal High Court by the Department of State Service DSS has further confirmed that Nigeria, under the Buhari Presidency, is finally sliding into dictatorship.

The party stated this in a statement issued in Abuja by Kola Ologbondiyan, it’s National Publicity Secretary. Read the statement below

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the furious invasion of the sanctity of the Federal High Court by the Department of State Services (DSS) further confirms that Nigeria, under the Buhari Presidency, is finally sliding into a frightening dictatorship.

The party alerts that the invasion of the court is a vindication of its earlier stand that the nation is no longer governed by democratic principles of rule or law and dictates of the constitution.

Today, the world watched with shock as operatives of the Presidency-controlled DSS, in a most horrific manner, swooped on the court, held the judiciary to ransom, disrupted proceedings, scared away the judge, chased away lawyers and journalists, attacked and re-arrested persons standing trial within the precincts of the court, in a manner that can only be obtainable in Idi Amin’s Uganda.

The invasion is in a forceful suspension of our constitutional order and a further battering of the judiciary, which points to an emerging lawlessness that can only find space in a military regime.

Without prejudice to the charge against the Convener of the “Revolution Now” movement, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, the PDP holds that, in a normal democracy, it is the duty of the court to determine the fate of an accused, according to the laws and not a resort to brute force by the government to silence persons with dissenting voices.

Our party notes that such a violation, as embarrassingly witnessed in the Abuja court this weekend, is a direct invitation to anarchy and a huge threat to the unity, peace, stability and corporate existence of our nation and the safety of our citizens.

Indeed, this is not the Nigeria our citizens yearn for and it is imperative to restate that Nigeria, under the Buhari Presidency, is fast sliding into a dark country where, laws are suspended, the judiciary is assaulted and citizens are stripped of their fundamental rights.

The PDP calls on well meaning Nigerians and the international community to call the Buhari Presidency to order before its actions derail our nation and trigger a breakdown of law and order in the land.

The international community must have more than a passing glance at the situation in Nigeria as any crisis in our country, God forbid, given our population, is capable of having a negative spill over effect across the African continent and other parts of the world.

The PDP urges Nigerians across board, irrespective of political, religious and ethnic learnings, to unite in condemnation of dictatorial tendencies of the present administration and in defending our democracy and unity as a nation.

Papa John's founder John Schnatter's wife files for divorce after 32-years of marriage

Annette Schnatter, the wife of Papa John's founder John Schnatter has filed for divorce from the pizza provocateur after 32-years of marriage.

In the court papers filed on Thursday, December 5, John's wife who identified herself as M. Annette Cos, said their marriage is irretrievably broken.

In her divorce petition, Cox points out she's self-employed but adds that John who is worth an estimated $500m is not employed.

According to the Courier-Journal, Cox said they separated on April 1, and had already come to a settlement as to how they want to separate their assets, which include Louisville's most expensive home (an $11 million, 18,000-square-foot mansion with 15 acres), a $6 million condo in Naples, Florida, and a $23 million condo in Deer Valley, Utah.

The couple who have been married since April 198, have two adult children.

The news of their divorce comes a year after the Papa John's founder was forced to resign as the CEO and board chairman of the company after using the N-word while defending support from white nationalist groups over his criticism of national anthem protests at NFL games.

Caroline Wozniacki announces retirement from tennis to focus on starting a family with her husband David Lee

Former world No 1 and a Danish professional tennis player, Caroline Wozniacki has announced she is retiring from tennis after next month's Australian Open.

The 29-year-old will end her career at Melbourne, where she won her only Grand Slam in 2018, in order to focus on starting a family and travelling the world with her husband and former NBA player David Lee.

Sharing the shocking news to her fans on Instagram, Wozniacki, who last competed in October, when she reached the semi-finals of the China Open in Beijing, wrote:

I’ve played professionally since I was 15 years old. In that time I’ve experienced an amazing first chapter of my life. With 30 WTA singles titles, a world #1 ranking for 71 weeks, a WTA Finals victory, 3 Olympics, including carrying the flag for my native Denmark, and winning the 2018 Australian Open Grand slam championship, I’ve accomplished everything I could ever dream of on the court.

I’ve always told myself, when the time comes, that there are things away from tennis that I want to do more, then it’s time to be done. In recent months, I’ve realized that there is a lot more in life that I’d like to accomplish off the court.

Getting married to David was one of those goals and starting a family with him while continuing to travel the world and helping raise awareness about rheumatoid arthritis (project upcoming) are all passions of mine moving forward.

So with that, today I am announcing that I will be retiring from professional tennis after the Australian Open in January. This has nothing to do with my health and this isn’t a goodbye, I look forward to sharing my exciting journey ahead with all of you!

Finally, I want to thank with all my heart, the fans, my friends, my sponsors, my team, especially my father as my coach, my husband, and my family for decades of support! Without all of you I could have never have done this!

The church is not showing a good example by blessing poor people who make money after coming into government - Peter Obi

Former Governor of Anambra State and Vice Presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 election, Peter Obi has blamed the church for the high level of corruption witnessed in the country.

Peter Obi who called for a reduction in the number of tollgates across the country as he spoke on the theme: “The Church and Good Governance” at the All Soul Church im Lekki on Wednesday December 4, stated that government must change its procurement processes to ensure money moved directly to institutions they are meant for.

The former Governor of Anambra State also alleged that the church is aiding corruption by blessing poor people who suddenly make money in government. According to him, the church must be conscious of being the conscience of the world.

“By blessing poor people who suddenly make money in government and come to church for thanksgiving rather than calling police for them, the church is not showing right example.

“As governor of Anambra, I reduced the cost of governance through eliminating many unnecessary things our people make part of government such as long convoys, maintaining multiple guests houses, travelling with retinue of aides, among others.

“By the time you know it, I had excess money to meet our obligations including clearing arrears of pension to the tune of abo

Ganduje signs law creating new emirates in Kano

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje has signed the new law backing the creation of four new emirates in the state.

The new law which sought the creation of new emirates and first-class emirs in Gaya, Rano, Karaye and Bichi, was unanimously passed by the state lawmakers on Thursday December 5.

Ganduje who insisted that the new emirates will facilitate active participation of rural dwellers in governance, said the fresh bill was approved by the state executive council and presented to the lawmakers on Monday December 2, following the nullification of Kano Emirs Appointment and Depositions Amendment Laws 2019 by Justice Usman Na’Allah of the state high court.

“As a law-abiding administration, we came and deliberated upon that at the State Executive Council. After which we sent the Bill to the State House of Assembly, seeking for the creation of 4 additional Emirates, namely Bichi, Rano, Gaya and Karaye,” he said.

He further explained that “After successfully passing the Bill by the House, here we are, as you are all witnessing the singing of the Bill into a Law. And our Emirates have come to stay.”

All things concerning the new Emirates were done, according to the governor “To bring development closer to the people. We need sustainable socio-economic development for our dear state. We need further improvement in the security system and well being of our people.”

The new law will give the state five emirates, including the Kano Emirate headed by Muhammadu Sanusi. The state house of assembly has also approved Mr Ganduje’s request to appoint 25 special advisers.

The conviction of Senate Chief Whip Orji Uzor Kalu shows Ibrahim Magu fears no one – NAC

Anti-graft group, Nigerians Against Corruption, NAC, has described the conviction of former governor of Abia state, Orji UzorKalu, by Justice Muhammed Idris of a Federal High Court in Lagos as a mark that shows EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu means business with the President Buhari’s anti-corrution war.

Orji Kalu, who is the Senate Chief Whip, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for stealing public funds while in office. Justice Idris further held that Mr Kalu’s company, Slok Nigeria Limited, the third defendant, be wounded up and all assets forfeited to the federal government.

Commenting on the judgment, the group’s National coordinator said with this feat, Magu deserves the support of all well meaning Nigerians while calling on the President to as a matter of exigency renominate him for a fresh 4-year term as the EFCC chairman.

“The conviction of a whole Senate Chief Whip has shown that Mr Ibrahim Magu is serious about eradicating financial corruption in our polity. If a former governor and a member of the President’s party can bag a 12 year jail term, I tell you this man means business”.

“Don’t forget that Orji Kalu holds a chieftaincy title from President Buhari’s hometown of Daura. His various media outfits also gave the president awards yet, Ibrahim Magu has sent him to jailed.

“I seriously call on President Buhari to return Magu as EFCC boss and also empower the agency to do much more. I also want to urge Nigerians to cooperate with this government to get rid of corruption in Nigeria.

The anti-graft crusader also added that Nigerians should expect the conviction of more high profile Nigerians.

Imagine not hanging killers but they want to hang hate speakers - Bishop Oyedepo speaks on hate speech bill

Bishop David Oyedepo who spoke on the opening day of Shiloh 2019, described the controversial hate speech bill as a 'crazy idea'.

“I don’t know if anyone loves Nigeria more than I do. Imagine they are not hanging killers, they want to hang ‘hate speakers?

“ Anyways that is dead already, if the wicked will not stop his wickedness God will stop his wickedness.”

Botham Jean's brother wins award for forgiving and hugging his brother's killer, Amber Guyger in court

Botham Jean’s brother, Brandt Jean was honored with an award for his courage in forgiving his brother's killer, Amber Guyger after her sentencing.

The Institute for Law Enforcement presented 18-year-old Brandt Jean with its 2019 Ethical Courage Award in Texas. It honors the empathy and forgiveness he showed the former Dallas Police Officer who killed his brother while he was in his home watching TV.

Jean testified at Amber Guyger’s sentencing hearing after she was convicted of murdering his brother in his own apartment. He said he loved her and did not want her to go to jail.

However, Guyger was sentenced to ten years in prison after claiming she thought she was in her own home at the time and thought Botham Jean was a Burglar.

Accepting the award on Tuesday, November 3, Brandt Jean used the opportunity to tell the police they could do better.

He said: "I want you all to know that I am not a threat, that young black males are not inherently dangerous or criminal. I implore you to champion policies and procedures that amplify the value of all lives. I insist that you encourage diverse leadership that can model inclusion and restraint.

"Most importantly, I ask that you remember my brother. And when you remember him, I want you to ask yourself what are you doing to ensure there will be no other families like mine — no other little brothers that have to model ethical leadership in forgiveness of a cop whose lack of training and discipline caused them to carelessly take the life of another.”

Gregory Smith, director of the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration, said he was honored to present the award to Jean for his ethics and integrity.

“Brandt Jean represents the best in us,” Smith said. “Despite an unimaginable loss, he saw the humanity in the person responsible for his brother’s death. He saw her pain and regret, and had the ability to show empathy, caring and forgiveness.”
