Late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti has been nominated for the 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Nigerian icon was announced as one of the nominees on Wednesday alongside other veteran stars such as Mary J. Blige, Kate Bush, Devo, Foo Fighters, The Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, Jay-Z, Chaka Khan, Carole King, LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, Todd Rundgren, Tina Turner, and Dionne Warwick.

In a statement, the chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, John Skyles said; “This remarkable ballot reflects the diversity and depth of the artists and music the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame celebrates.

“These Nominees have left an indelible impact on the sonic landscape of the world and influenced countless artists that have followed them.”

If Fela Kuti is inducted, he will make history as the first Nigerian artist in the Rock and Roll hall of fame.

Fela is remembered as an influential icon who was brave enough to boldly voice his opinions on matters that affected the nation through his music. At the height of his popularity, he was referred to as one of Africa's most "challenging and charismatic music performers."

Music lovers can cast their votes for their favorite stars through April 30, on Hall’s website as the 2021 inductees will be announced in May, with the ceremony to take place in Cleveland this fall.
