Trump's attempt to give Americans extra $2,000 relief cheques blocked by Senate leader Mitch McConnell in massive power play

Trump

The US Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, an ally of Trump during the president's tenure, has rejected attempts to give new $2000 to Americans despite  President Donald Trump, congressional Democrats and some Republicans agreeing that the Coronavirus relief aid should be given.

The House of Representatives, held by the Democrats, voted for higher relief.

But Mr McConnell's objections mean there will not be a direct vote on a revised Covid aid bill in the Senate.

Trump

According to McConnell, raising aid cheques from $600  to $2,000 would be "another fire hose of borrowed money"

The move, a huge power play by McConnell, shows he is ready to defy Trump, the second time he is going against the president, weeks after releasing a statement acknowledging Joe Biden's win.

Congress agreed the smaller $600 payments in a Covid relief and government funding bill that Trump sent back to Capitol Hill before Christmas, with the president seeking higher stimulus payments.

Surprisingly, House Democrats - political foes of Trump - passed the measure for $2,000 cheques that he requested.

Dozens of House Republicans, reluctant to defy Mr Trump, sided with Democrats to approve the package.

"Unless Republicans have a death wish, and it is also the right thing to do, they must approve the $2,000 payments ASAP," Trump tweeted on Tuesday.

But now McConnell, determined to show he now owns power in the Republican party as the Senate leader, with Trump set to exit the White House next month, has now rejected the proposed aid.

McConnell rejected Democrats' calls for the senate to vote on the $2,000 cheques package passed by their counterparts in the legislative House.

He said the bill had "no realistic path to quickly pass the Senate".

Speaking in the chamber on Wednesday, the Kentucky senator said: "The Senate is not going to be bullied into rushing out more borrowed money into the hands of Democrats' rich friends who don't need the help."

Instead he offered to roll the proposal for $2,000 cheques into another bill to include other measures raised by Trump such as ending legal protection for tech companies, known as Section 230 and setting up a bipartisan commission to investigate Trump's unsubstantiated claims of systemic electoral fraud.

Democrats said McConnell's proposal was  a legislative poison pill aimed at killing the $2000 stimulus payments as Democrats won't agree to the other demands wanted by Trump.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent who votes with Democrats, said on the Senate floor: "All we are asking for is a vote. What is the problem?

"If you want to vote against $2,000 checks for your state, vote against it."

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said: "What we're seeing right now is leader McConnell trying to kill the cheques - the $2,000 cheques desperately needed by so many American families."

And House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: "These Republicans in the Senate seem to have an endless tolerance for other people's sadness."

January will be a tough month, there might be a spike in Coronavirus cases - NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has raised an alarm of January 2021 being a very tough month following the disregard for health protocols during the December holidays.

Speaking at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Tuesday December 29, the Director-General of NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu noted that the nation’s health system is struggling to cope with the increasing number of coronavirus infections daily. He added that a spike in Coronavirus infections in January is imminent.

Ihekweazu said;

“We just faced the worst week since we started responding to this outbreak. We had more cases in Nigeria last week than in any other previous week since the beginning of the outbreak.

“Pictures and videos from across the country paint a very disheartening situation because it appears that our messages, our appeals to Nigerians over the last few months have not been heeded and we have gone ahead with business as usual.

“Events centres are full, social activities are full and so it is no surprises that cases are rising.

“January will be a tough month, no doubt about it. So, we have to brace ourselves for the consequences of the activities that we have decided to carry out in December.”

Trump and Michelle Obama win Gallup's most admired man and woman of 2020

US President, Donald Trump and former first lady, Michelle Obama are the most admired man and woman of 2020, according to a new Gallup poll.

In a tumultuous year in which Trump was impeached, widely criticized for his administration's handling of the coronavirus pandemic and racial tensions, and lost reelection, it is no mean feat for him.

It's the first time Trump has topped the list alone, ending a 12-year run by his predecessor, Barack Obama, with whom he tied for the most admired man in 2019.

For Michelle Obama, it's her third straight year as the most admired woman in America.

Barack Obama came in second among men at 15%. US President-elect Joe Biden came in third with 6% of and Dr. Anthony Fauci, the US' top infectious disease expert, came in fourth with 3%.

Pope Francis, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Bill Gates were also among the most admired men on the list.

48% of Republicans voted Trump while Obama was the top choice among Democrats with 32% and Biden received 13% among Democrats.

Trump and Obama were split among Independents with 11%.

For most admired woman, Michelle Obama received 10% of votes. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris followed behind with 6% and first lady Melania Trump came in third place with 4%.

Melania Trump came in second to Michelle Obama in 2019 and has been among the top 10 most admired women the past four years, but had never come first.

Hillary Clinton, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Justice Amy Coney Barrett, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Queen Elizabeth II were also among the most admired women.

Trump's win reflects his enduring popularity among Republicans.

Gallup noted that few Republicans named anyone else besides the President.

The poll was conducted by telephone from December 1-17 among a random sample of 1,018 adults.

The news comes two months after she said their wedding plans were on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

'It's been great for us. We've really enjoyed the time together, as much as one can,' she reflected.

'When you're living together and you see each other every single day, 24 hours a day, you get to know each other pretty quickly. I think it's been good for us to really find out everything about each other, and I think we've gotten a lot closer throughout the whole process.'

Lindsey and PK began dating in December 2017 and went public with their romance in June of the following year.

Prior to that, Lindsey was married to fellow 2002 Olympian Thomas Vonn from 2007 until 2013.

'How can we pay PSG?' - Lionel Messi doubtful of reunion with Neymar at Barcelona

Barcelona legend and captain, Lionel Messi has raised doubts of his current club's ability to bring Neymar back to the club.

Neymar made a world-record €222 million move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 but has been consistently linked with a return to Camp Nou with Neymar last month asking for a reunion with Messi.

But Messi, who himself has been linked with a move to PSG, as his current deal expires in the summer, believes Barca's current financial difficulties will hamper Neymar's return to the Spanish giants.

Speaking to La Sexta, Messi said; "How do you pay Paris for the transfer?"

"It is not easy, it will be a difficult situation for the new president. He will have to be very intelligent, get everything in order and make many changes to make it go well.

"It will also be difficult to bring in players because we need money and there is no money. There are several important current players we need to fight again for everything and you have to pay them."

On Neymar's recent declaration that he wants to be Messi's team-mate again, he added: "He didn't say, 'Let's play,' he said, 'I'd like to play' … right?

"Yes, we talk from time to time. The three of us either with him or with Luis [Suarez] every day. We maintain the relationship."

Messi also commented on his relationship with Antoine Griezmann, after the French star's uncle hit out at the Argentine last month.

According to Messi, him and Griezmann get along just fine.

"The relationship is good, I already said it," Messi insisted. "I never had problems with him and I never did everything that was said, that I did not want his signing and all that, I think it was more than clarified.

"I have no problems, The relationship is good and sometimes we drink mate together in the dressing room and on trips. There is no kind of anything."

We didn’t apologise to Buhari for summoning him - House of Representatives

We didn?t apologise to Buhari for summoning him - House of Representatives

The house of representatives has denied report of apologizing to President Muhammadu Buhari for inviting him to brief lawmakers on the state of security in the country.

This came after it was reported that "some lawmakers who sponsored the motion because of Zabamari rice farmers massacre went through the back door to the presidency to apologise over their insistence that the president must appear before the national assembly."

In a statement released on Monday by the house of representatives spokesperson Benjamin Kalu, the lawmakers stated that the President or the Presidency as the case may be, never sought for an apology from the House of representatives for carrying out her constitutional responsibility to the Nigerian electorate.

The statement read;

“It has come to the knowledge of the house that few sections of the media reported that House apologized to the Presidency over the resolutions of the House which arose from the motion sponsored by members from Borno State, requesting for the invitation of the President to brief the nation on the state of insecurity in the country.

“The President or the Presidency as the case may be, never sought for an apology from the House of representatives for carrying out her constitutional responsibility to the Nigerian electorate. Where then did the media get the report that the House as an institution apologized to anyone? Media professionals are advised to uphold the ethics of their profession.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the House never apologized to anyone for exercising her constitutional mandate and the 9th assembly of the House of Representatives under the leadership of Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila will not do anything to desecrate or destroy the critical institution of democracy – the Legislature. We strongly believe that President Muhammadu Buhari subscribes to these democratic ethos and ideals as well.”

While other countries have barred all flights from these countries, the NCAA has decided to adopt new guidelines for passengers from these countries.

According to the letter, passengers from these countries must present the following documents in order to be allowed to board their flights to Nigeria.

“The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 over the weekend issued new travel rules for passengers on direct flights from the UK and South Africa due to the variance of coronavirus discovered recently in these two countries.

“The penalty is a fine of $3,500 for each passenger boarded and who fails to meet the new travel measures recently announced by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19,” the letter read
